The first step I have chosen to take in building this highboy is to carve the two drawer fronts with shells. After I am satisfied with them, I will build the bottom carcass then build the top carcass and finish by fitting the piece with all of its drawers.

ReplyDeleteI just paid my first visit to this site. Your work is outstanding, far surpassing any reproductions that I have ever seen. When I moved to New Orleans in the early 60's, I was privileged to be able to spend quite a bit of time with Henry Stern, a Royal Street Antiques' Dealer that was thought of as the best of the best down here.. The reason he spent so much time with me was that when we first began to talk, and he found out that I was from Natchez, he said that a lady from Natchez took him in tow when he was much younger and taught him just about every thing he knew about antiques. You guessed it, the lady was Annie Mamma, It's a small world, Anyway he gave my wife du jour and I a guided tour of his shop, his warehouse and then other antique shops on Royal St. He also insisted that we come back the next day because he wasn't finished with me. Needless to say, I got an education that weekend, and because of it when I visit some of the shops such as Royal Antiques, Kyle's , Mosse's, etc., the older owners remember the incident, as they refer to it, and have told me they had never known Henry Stern to do anything like that. I have never Googled him, but it might be interesting; Henery is long gone. During our grand tour he pointed out some fake's (Rau's) and showed me where they were made in the back of the building. Being poor and without wherewithal, I purchased a beautiful reproduction (fake antique) of a flame grained mahogany, card table for less than a $100 from Billy Rau that day. My X-wife still has it and it still looks as good as the day I bought it. Henry laughed and said he was appalled, but understood. Sorry I rambled but I figured you would appreciate the uniqueness of my adventure.
